Design & Build

Traditionally, most landscape architecture firms would develop a design and then “farm out” the construction to any number of vendors. By the early 90’s the “design/build” approach to project delivery gained tremendous popularity allowing for a single contract for both design and construction. But design-build is defined by more than just a one-source contract. It tends to be much more collaborative, a team-oriented process built on trust, mutual respect, innovation and creative problem solving. Design-build simply works better than methods that allow for passing the buck. We agree! Biosphere Landscape Architecture relies on this highly nimble approach where our own designers, draftsmen, carpenters, horticulturists, stone masons and electrical engineers all have a higher level of participation and can build our projects from the ground up. We can be more innovative and respond faster to any challenge or opportunity that may arise during construction.

What does it take to make Design/Build truly succeed in a real-world landscape architecture environment?

We roll up our sleeves. Keep a spare pair of shoes in the truck. We select our own plants, our own rocks and sculpt the landscape with a hands-on approach that gives us the artistic control to see opportunities that get missed from behind a desk.
